Dennis Loska | Portfolio

Hi, I'm Dennis. I love to create websites!

Please take a look at my work!

My first website

This is my first website, which I created in March 2016. I used a Wordpress-Theme from Tesseract and Wordpress as the CMS of course. I learned a lot about the structure of a website and how a CMS works in general. The hosting of this site ended in April 2017 so I can only show you some screenshots of it.

University Project

This was a project during my first year at university. The challenge was to create a website without any frameworks - just straight HTMl5, CSS3 an JS. It was my first project, in which I learned how responsive design in general works. It is not the most beautiful website, but gets the job done by using media-queries.

SASS & Bootstrap

This is a demo of a blog, which I created in order to get more familiar with frontend frameworks. I used Twitter's Bootstrap to layout the page with it's grid-system. Furthermore I used SASS to learn more advanced CSS techniques. It might not be the prettiest design, but I'm happy with it.

Trying React

My previous projects were more focused on HTML & CSS. I wanted to dive in a bit more deep into Javascript in this one so I decided to try out React, a Javascript library by Facebook. It uses Flickr's and Google's APIs to retrieve some pictures. I want to try out React most definetly in the future more often because of it's ability to manage states.

This is a little site I build, when I was working on the curriculum at Freecodecamp to improve my Javascript-skills. I used the API of Quotesondesign to get some random quotes in JSON-format, which then get processed and displayed in the empty textfield.

Local Weather

In this project I used the Darksky API and the HTML5 Geolocation feature to get the local weather. You can switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius by clicking on the text under the animated image. This is also another project for Freecodecamp. The next project is going to be a simple Wikipedia-viewer. By now I'm feeling pretty confident working with APIs.

Previous experience & interests

Since October 2016 I study International Media and Computing at the HTW Berlin. My main fields of work and interest are web development and object orientated programming using Java. I'm searching for an internship to work as a deveveloper preferably dealing with JavaScript and backend technologies like NodeJS and DevOps.

I feel very confident to work with HTML, CSS, basic JS and clientside Java. On top of that I have some experience with frontend frameworks like Material Design Lite or Bootstrap. I'm also familiar with git and use Github for my personal and university projects, like this portfolio for example. In addition to this I have also gained professional work experience since May 2017, when I started a part-time job as a web developer at FirstFinance GmbH, where I worked in a small team on different projects using Gitlab, Atom, VSCode, Ubuntu, XAMPP and more every week.

Here's a short list of all the technologies I enjoy to work with so far on a regulary basis:

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Javascript
  • Bootstrap
  • SASS
  • Grunt (npm)
  • Git
  • Java
  • Ubuntu
  • Terminal,DevTools,IntelliJ,Atom,VSCode

Feel free to contact me, if you think I might be the right guy for your team!

Here are some more facts about me.

Hi, my name is Dennis Loska and I am 25 years old. I want to become a developer to create awesome applications and websites. I created this website to kick-start my career and to challenge myself. To me, the best way to learn is to gain experience by creating things. In order to accomplish this I will add references to my future projects on this site. I like teamwork and sharing ideas so I can learn from more experienced people and others from my humble knowledge. Therefore I often find myself on sites like codepen or stackoverflow to see how other people solved their problems.

Since fall 2016 I am also a student of International Media and Computing at the HTW Berlin. So far I am very happy with this study field, because of the great equipment in the labs of the HTW and the hands-on mentality in classes. My favourite tools to work with so far are IntelliJ, Atom and Brackets. Besides all this my favourite books to learn from are "Head First Java" by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates and "HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites" by Jon Duckett. I can highly recommend them to anyone who would like to learn Java and basic web-technologies.

What else can I tell you about me besides the work I like?

I'm living in Berlin and I like cycling a lot. I even got an trainer at home so I can spin the wheels even in the colder seasons! Berlin itself isn't that great for cyclists, but the surrounding area has beatiful landscapes and good roads to offer. Since I´m not living in the dead center of Berlin it only takes me about 15 minutes to get out of the city and have a good ride without annoying traffic lights. Furthermore I like to eat fruits and vegetables. Some dates or bananas are the perfect snack on a bike-ride! Derek Banas, a youtuber with an awesome channel about programming tutorials has also some great recipes there. Since the job as a developer in an office requires no physical activity I think this is a great way to improve health and overall well-being.
